Best practices on uploading images and files to SOLU

Product Images Web sizes

File name logic Decide on a logical format how to name all your product images. The usual format that we have learned works in most cases:

“productnumber-SomethingmoreForFilename-CompanyName-WEB.jpg”
For example: 3948-LoremIpsum_Machine00239-Valio-WEB.jpg

Please note that the order of the naming logic is important. Make sure it always stays in the order of product number, hyphen (-), product name, hyphen, company name, hyphen, WEB. These should always be uniform through out the whole image base. It is best if the word WEB is behind every product image so that optimizing the images in bulk later on makes it easier to find.
File size  Max 100 KB. Best would be under 50KB.
Width / Height  Max 1000px / 1000px
Resolution  72dpi
Color format  sRBG
File format  .JPG. You can also you .PNG but we generally advice against it since png has worse compression abilities and it leaves the file sizes too big.
Other things to consider What comes to web product images the imperative that you follow them diligently since it has a direct impact on your sites page load times and thus also on SEO, since google puts emphasis on pages that load fast.

The file naming of the products also has benefits in the SEO side of things since clients find right photos with product number and also with the right company info.

A good practise is also NOT to add any white spaces around the product images so they can be more easily styled to look uniform with CSS/code. This can be easily done with the Photoshop "Trim" function.

Example of the right cropping in product images An example of the right way to crop product images. Remove any excess white space around the product before uploading it to SOLU.

Product Images Print sizes

If your project has a field for print sized product images or you use SOLU as your own internal media base then these are the settings we recommend you use before uploading these files to SOLU.

File name logic

The usual format that we have learned works in most cases:
“productnumber-SomethingmoreForFilename-CompanyName-PRINT.jpg”
For example: 3948-LoremIpsum_Machine00239-Nokia-PRINT.jpg

Please note that the most important parts of the file name are the product number and the hyphen (-). These should always be uniform through out the whole image base. It is best if the word PRINT is behind every product image so that optimizing the images in bulk later on makes it easier to find.

File size Max 1-2 M
Width / Height Max 3000px / 3000px
Resolution 150-300 dpi
Color format RBG tai CMYK
File format .JPG
Other things to consider The recommendations for print images is not so particular as they are for web images since the user will usually knows before hand that the file size is larger if they decide to download it to their computer.
But we would still advice to not use SOLU as your company image database for original images since the monthly billing from the server is calculated by the amount of data saved there. There are cheaper options for image databases than SOLU ;)
